Jack Frost

Whilst we seem to be having a little break from the freezing cold weather, it's hard to believe that this time last week my garden, and shed, were covered in frost.

The lawn was crunchy for days and everything was a magical, glistening white. It was like living in Narnia.

Let's hope there's another sprinkling of frost, or even snow, before Christmas.

Merry Christmas and thank you to everyone for all your support! x

Make... Orange and Clove Pomanders

It was so cold yesterday that my children and I decided to stay indoors, keep warm and make these sweet smelling, Orange and Clove Pomanders, which are now sitting happily in my kitchen.

They're so easy to make and smell seriously festive.

Create a design by piercing holes into your orange and then push a clove into each hole.

Make... little ice decorations!

What do you do with children when it's frosty and they're in desperate need of a game to play outside but when there's no snow to entertain them?

Well, I discovered this great idea recently... make ice decorations!

It's so easy to do.

Simply choose a cheap container and fill it with water. Then get your little ones to pick up leaves, twigs, rosehips (with your help) etc... and put in the water. Then leave outside and let the cold weather do the rest. By the next day (frost depending) the water will have frozen. Then tap out the ice and put on display in the garden - you can create a hole by piercing the decorations with a hot knitting needle and threading with twine, string, ribbon - you choose!

I have to say I'm really pleased with the result and it fascinated my children too!

So simple!

Not long now... it's almost time for Advent!

Advent seems to come around faster every year, especially when you have children and lots of present to plan and wrap, but I always look forward to the countdown to Christmas.

As a child, I loved opening the little windows of the nativity calendar. It seemed to make each day magical and full of expectation. So much so that it almost seems a shame that our children now expect TV character calendars filled with chocolate.

So to carry on the magic, but with an inevitable 'modern' twist, I've found these little, rusty advent buckets from Ruby & The Crow at the recent House & Garden Spirit of Christmas Fair.

This merry chain will soon be hung in my home and filled with chocolates for the family to enjoy, including me!

Herbal remedies!

After a recent visit to Church Farm for a Herbal Remedies evening, I thought I'd share my notes with you and pass on a great recipe for making oils which can be used for your skin.

How to make a herb oil...

Sterilise a suitable jar (preferably dark glass) and chop up your chosen herb before almost filling the jar. Add some good quality Sunflower or Olive Oil. Press the herbs down using a wooden spoon to get rid of any air bubbles. Put the lid on and store in a dark place and remember to give it a stir every day for the first two weeks, and then once a week for another 2-3 weeks. Finally filter the oil into suitable jars or bottles and apply to your skin as and when you need to.

Here are just a few oils to choose from! For more ideas, scour second hand book shops for great books about Herbs!

Aloe Vera: Stomach ailments, colon cleansing (eat it or rub on skin)

Basil: Digestion, antiseptic

Comfrey: Soothing, healing, good for the complexion

Echinacea: Immunity

Feverfew: Headaches

Ginger: Energising

Lavender: Relaxing. Oil good in baths.

A warming start to a wet Monday morning

Ok, I must admit that after a week away in Norfolk, walking up to the shed in my wellies this morning was less than exciting. The shed was a wee bit damp and chilly, so imagine my delight when I was asked to dash over to the home of one of the owners of Cuckoo Clothing for an important meeting.

Not only was I greeted by their adorable dogs and cat, but I was invited in to sit down by the Aga to discuss business. I cannot reveal what was being talked about around the kitchen table, but it's so exciting and I can't wait to get the ball rolling! Oh and the Jaffa cakes and tea were a welcome treat too!

Watch this space as it's going to be a jam-packed few months! In the meantime, here's a lovely pic from my hols.

Greengage Jam, made by me

And here it is, my homemade Greengage Jam!
It was simple to make and tastes oh, so sweet, especially when lovingly spread on warm toast for breakfast. Hmmmm.

Tuesday 17 August 2010

My flourishing garden!

After a sun-drenched garden in July, it's wonderful to see that a bit of rain has really helped my garden to flourish, as I hoped it would this Summer.

My vegetable patch is already happily producing fresh raspberries, courgettes, potatoes and there are still the tomatoes, runner beans and hopefully, sweetcorn to come! The leeks will go in soon!

But what really makes me smile is when the flowers start to bloom.

I have the biggest sunflowers (no really, I think it's a record after a very poor result last year) and the Hydrangea which I carefully wrapped up during the winter months is beautiful... again, it's the first time I've really won with one!

The Echinacea still grows happily under the pear tree and looks wonderful sat in an old jug on my dresser in the kitchen, alongside my home-grown Hypericum (St John's Wort), Sunflowers and butterfly loving, Solidago.

Talking of butterflies, I created a butterfly garden for my children last year and it seems to be working as we've definitely had more visit us this summer.

My children, especially my 3 year old daughter loves to help me pick the vegetables and flowers on a regular basis, whilst my 18 month old son, generally likes to roll around in the mud! His time will come...

Happy days!

Fashion heaven!

I had the perfect start to the day this morning. Firstly, my children slept in and secondly, I had an appointment at Cuckoo at Burwash Manor to see for the first time their new Autumn/Winter collection.

What could be better than to enter a shop filled with fabulous clothes and accessories! I was in shopping heaven!

I instantly fell in love with the funky, Liberty print shirts from 0039 Italy, the new Olive and Orange range by Orla Keily and this oh, so pretty nightwear from Cora.

Oh and this stunning, classic coat from Marilyn Moore!

Here's a small snapshot, but for the best experience, I recommend visiting Cuckoo before you miss out!

A heart made of cheese...

Hmm, delicious!

Greengages & hopefully, jam making!

On my way to work this morning, I noticed that my greengage trees are full of nearly ripe fruit.

I've lived in my house for 4 years and have sadly never made use of this delicious fruit, but this year, I've made a promise to myself to try making Greengage jam.

So I've found a recipe and it sounds really easy, so wish me luck!

Tamara Fogle

Whilst meeting with Cuckoo Clothing today, I was introduced to the gorgeous bags 'made in the British Isles' by Tamara Fogle (yes, Ben's sister).

Tamara, who is based in Portobello, London has a background in antiques and interior styling which strongly influences her distinctive use of genuine textiles.

Her website and blog are definitely worth a look, but don't forget Cuckoo sell her bags and are the only stockist in Cambridge, so if you fancy a new accessory that's of 'splendid quality' pop along to the shop at Burwash Manor.

Monday 12 July 2010

Hello, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle

You never know who's going to arrive on your doorstep, do you? Whilst working this morning, I could hear some leaves rustling and when I turned around there she was, a inquisitive little hedgehog, or as she'll now be known, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. What a lovely surprise on a Monday morning.

Monday 28 June 2010

Elderflower picking

I went Elderflower picking at the weekend and look what I made! Delicious (and I've had that confirmed!) Elderflower cordial is so easy to make.

Pick 25 Elderflower heads and rinse them. You then need 3 litres of boiling hot water and a big bowl. Pour the water into the bowl, along with 900g of granulated sugar and 50g of Citric Acid (from your local chemist) and leave it to dissolve and cool. Then add your Elderflower heads and some lemons. Cover and leave it for 24 hours, then strain it before pouring the syrup into sterilised bottles.

Now all you have to do is pour some into a glass, add some water and drink it! And if you have some bottles spare, why not give one to a loved one as a special gift.

Tip: If you're not sure what Elderflowers look like, click here.

I hear my sister when strawberry picking at Bury Lane Farm Shop and made jam at the weekend too. I'm hoping to try that on some scones later on in the week. Our Grandma who was a keen jam maker would have been very proud.

Cornish dreams

Having just returned from a delightful and rather idyllic holiday on the Cornish coast, I'm really proud of what our country has to offer.

With just a week to explore the delights of deepest Cornwall we stayed in a wonderful, little harbour town called Porthleven, which had everything you could possibly need. Great tasting Cornish Pasties, harbour cafes and restaurants (and not to mention ice cream!), artisan galleries and gift shops and a secluded shingle beach to play on.

But just less than an hour's drive away was the stunning, seaside town of St Ives. I think the highlight for me had to be Harbour Beach which was exactly that, a harbour which once the tide was out, became a gorgeous, sandy beach, perfect for making sandcastles with my two children. Oh, and did I mention the shops too... Cath Kidston, Joules and then to the Tate for a Cornish Cream Tea. Just perfect!

Personally, I can't wait to go again next year. Here are some great cottages if you fancy exploring yourself... www.nicheretreats.co.uk

Hang out the bunting!

In true British spirit and to give my garden a jolly, country-style look, I have hung up some pretty bunting on the shed today, courtesy of Gisela Graham. Bring on the elderflower and daisy chains, I'm ready for summer!

Tuesday 25 May 2010

Berylware - knitted by the nation

Just a little note to say how much I love Berylware's gorgeous scarves which have been 'hand knitted by the nation'.

Spotted on last night's edition of 'High Street Dreams' I have instantly become of fan of Beryl's designs which she says "are inspired by 'rose tinted memories' of a time when craft meant comfort, and warmth was not just an open fire but homemade apple pie, evenings round the wireless and a wink from the boy next door."

And they're made in Britain too!

Cuckoo

I've just got back to the shed after a lovely meeting with the ladies who own the gorgeous shops Cuckoo and Cuckoo Kids at Burwash Manor.

With stockists including Avoca, Odd Molly, Saltwater, Seasalt and Marilyn Moore to name but a few, it's definitely on my shopping list.

Oh, and they have a beautiful website too designed by my favourite designers, Mack and Me.

Go on, indulge yourself.

Monday 24 May 2010

Hot, hot, hot or should I say ho, ho, ho?

Well what can I say other than in a typically, British fashion, it's too hot! Working in the shed today is absolutely beautiful, but if I'm honest it could do with being a little cooler. Still, what a beautiful day to be working at Little House PR.

It's a busy day too as Breeze has just launched its Autumn/Winter collection, so I'm already speaking to journalists about their Christmas issues - fancy that!

If you're already thinking ahead to those cooler days then take a look at these cute little trays. Country Living and 25 Beautiful Homes magazine already have their eye on them, so I recommend keeping a look out for them in Breeze's gorgeous shop on Trinity Street in Cambridge and online www.breeze.uk.com from October.

Monday 10 May 2010

What's happening in my garden today?

The birds are singing, particularly my little friend, Robin Redbreast who perches himself on the garden fence beside me. The fragrant flowers on the lilac tree are filling the air with their sweet smelling scent as the Hostas are starting to grow. I'm also looking forward to the arrival of the frilly, pink Peonies and the bright purple Alliums, but I think I might have to wait a few more weeks for those." says Sweet William.

Fanfare please, my new website is now live! So why not pop the kettle on, sit down and take a look. I hope you like it.

A BIG thank you to Dan and Julia at Mack & Me for designing such a beautiful site.

Wednesday 5 May 2010

I just love it when this happens!

I've been working in PR for a long time now and if I've learnt one thing it's that careful targeting and, quite often, persistence really does get results. Keep a look out for some wonderful, home accessories for Christmas from Breeze www.breeze.uk.com in a forthcoming issue of the fabulous, Country Living magazine.

Tuesday 4 May 2010

Definitely time for Tea!

Don't you just love it when you discover something which makes your heart beat with excitement?! Well, I've just discovered a delightful, little tea shop in North London called Emporium Tea Rooms. It's probably not somewhere to take my husband, but for a girly treat that's trimmed with bunting, I think it fits the bill perfectly! All I need now is a good excuse!

Cheerful, little pompoms

It was time to brighten up outside my shed last weekend, so I popped along to my local garden centre and bought some lovely little plants for the pots I've collected over the years. My favourite has to be the ones which were hand-picked by my daughter who adores pink. These pompom-like daisies are called Bellis and are available in an array of sugary shades. What a cheery sight!

News....

as featured in a recent edition of the Cambridge Evening News...

"City centre store Breeze, which sells gifts and items for the home from its Trinity Street premises, has appointed Royston firm Little House PR to look after its media relations and PR activity...."

Sweet William

Please say hello to Sweet William, the new addition to Little House PR. William is a small statue who lives in my garden under a Greengage tree alongside the bird table. He loves to sit in the sun and watch what’s going on in the garden, so keep a look out for his latest sights.

Wellie Boots at the ready, it's grow your own time!

It's grow your own season, so I've been to the garden centre and have armed myself with five large bags of manure and a selection of fruit and veg ready to sow. All I need now is for the children to go to sleep early so I can make a start before the sun sets.

I've just picked the last of our purple and white stem Broccoli which was delicious with the Chicken Pie I ate for supper last night. With those out of the way I can now sow the potatoes, onions, rhubarb and parsnips. I have five little strawberry plants to sow too, but I'm yet to decide on where to put them. I had hanging baskets last year which worked a treat, but I thought I'd try something different this summer, but can't decide between the vegetable patch alongside the raspberry canes, or buying a sweet, little strawberry pot for the patio.

Any ideas would be gratefully received, please email me at nina@littlehousepr.co.uk

If you're keen to eat some local food, pop along to Bury Lane Farm Shop who now have fresh asparagus for sale. Don't forget to pick up a seasonal recipe card before you leave too.

On another note, my website www.littlehousepr.co.uk is almost ready and is looking fab thanks to Dan and Julia at Mack and Me. I'll keep you posted!

Bye for now.

Bumblebees & kitchens

I'm surrounded by blossom today, so much so that my daughter actually thought it was snowing over the weekend. The Greengage tree, which underwent some heavy pruning a few years ago is hanging its blossom filled branches over the shed, and its beautiful, sweet smelling scent is attracting the busy Bumblebees. A few of them have even come in to say hello, in fact here's one now!

Help save the Bumblebees www.bumblebeeconservation.org.uk

Speaking of Bees, I've just started working with Barbara White at Newnham Kitchens near Ashwell. She offers a wonderful choice of kitchens - I'm quite interested in having the option of colour matching the cabinets to Nigella's duck egg blue. Why not pop along to have a look for yourself - Newnham Kitchens, Hall Barn, Ashwell Road, Herts SG7 5JX www.newnhamkitchens.co.uk

Breeze in Cambridge appoints Little House PR

Breeze, which offers attractive gifts and ingenious items for the home in the heart of Cambridge on Trinity Street and via its online website www.breeze.uk.com, has appointed Little House PR.

We were chosen by Breeze owner Anne Bannell, despite also being contacted by a number of Cambridge-based agencies. Anne says: “We have chosen to work with Little House PR as we feel that it is a likeminded company which is ideally set up to support our business, and given Nina Lancaster’s past experience, will also offer us the best PR opportunities.”.

Nina says: “I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Breeze as I am already a huge fan of the shop. Breeze perfectly illustrates the type of local businesses I’m keen to work with and to have such a wide variety of products to promote, especially for the busy summer party and wedding season, I can’t wait to start.

Beautiful Norfolk

Where do you go to enjoy a relaxing weekend away? Well, having just returned from spending two nights in Holt, I recommend the Norfolk coast.

My husband and I stayed at the 'posh B&B' Byfords in Holt which was a real pleasure. The rooms were sooo cosy and they have a wonderful deli, cafe and restaurant too. And if that's not enough, we were presented with a free cup of tea and cake on arrival, and bedtime cookies just before we fell asleep.

It was also a great place to stay before exploring the delights of the North Norfolk coast - Cley, Wells
next the Sea, Burnham Market, Cromer and even Nelson's birthplace - Burnham Thorpe.

My top five places to visit in Norfolk
  1. Byfords Posh B & B - they serve the best breakfasts
  2. The Pigs in Edgefield - voted Country Pub of the Year 2009 by Country Life magazine and a quirky and very piggy experience!
  3. Hello Sweetie - sellers of traditional sweets, the Rhubarb & Custards are my favourite!
  4. The Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorpe - Nelson's cosy, local pub
  5. Wells next the Sea - a vast, bracing beach with beautiful sand dunes to race up and down. Why not hire a beach hut for the day!
We also met a pheasant along the way too, but that's another story....

Monday 22 March 2010

We're in the Cambridge Evening News!

Little House PR makes it onto the Movers & Shakers page!

'Nina Lancaster has launched Little House PR from her garden shed in Royston. She has worked in PR for 15 years and has promoted some of the biggest consumer brands, including Willis & Gambier, Halo, Multiyork and Heinz; but she is now focusing on cottage industry.

"I want to help farm shops, florists, potters, local beauty salons," Nina says.'

Bella, bella

With two children, one buggy and shopping bags in tow, my husband and I treated ourselves to lunch at Jamie's Italian in Cambridge on Saturday. Dare I say it, but I think we've actually beaten many of our single friends in getting a table too! I've never been to any of Mr Oliver's restaurants before, but this was brilliant! Not only did we sit opposite the pasta machine and watched hungrily as the chef made my Truffle Tortellini, but I tasted the best Tiramisu too.

Upsy daisy do

There may not have been many daffodils out for the first day of Spring, but my daughter was very excited to pick her first daisy of the year. In just a few more weeks we'll be merrily making daisy chains in the garden!

Monday 15 March 2010

It's sunny in the shed!

Sitting at my desk working today is a real treat.

Not only did I get to tiptoe through the daffodil bulbs as I made my way up the garden, I've got the door open to welcome in the warmer air and that glorious sunshine.

Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 said is was a lovely day, and he was right! I was even tempted to enjoy my lunch outside today, but work wouldn't wait.

Let's hope the sun stays around until the weekend when I'm off to the Thriplow Daffodil Festival. It's the first day of Spring on Sunday and my mother's birthday, and I can't think of a better place to mark both occasions!

Happy Birthday Mum!

The newly formed, Royston Ladies Circle is planning to take part in Country Living magazine's 'Your Countryside Needs You' campaign and will host, one of many, Britain's Biggest Bring & Buy Sales to mark the occasion.

Home Sweet Home

It has often been referred to as the wendy house, the shed and the office, but I like to think of it as my 'Little House' and it really is the perfect place to work and to gain inspiration.

Bird watching

The sun is shining and the family of blackbirds, or at least, Mummy and Daddy Blackbird are busy finding a safe place to nest this Spring. I'd forgotten just how busy our garden was last year and how my daughter and I could barely keep up with crumbling up bread crumbs. Which reminds me, I must buy a nesting box for the blue tits.

Wednesday 3 March 2010

Fancy a cup of tea?

Where would we be without a cup of tea?

For me, tea is a perfect pick me up at 6am in the morning or at 4pm in the afternoon. And what better way to enjoy it than with your favourite biscuit, whilst you're busy working in the garden shed.

My favourite at the moment is the classic Tunnock's Caramel - did you know that 'more than 5,000,000 of these biscuits are made and sold every week?' Made by T. Tunnock Ltd in Scotland this milk chocolate caramel wafer is the perfect complement to a mug of Yorkshire tea.

If you want to find your perfect biscuit and have some fun too, I recommend visiting www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com for inspiration.

If you fancy a cup of tea, and a sit down whilst talking shop, please write to me at nina@littlehousepr.co.uk I'll bring the biscuits!

Sunday 28 February 2010

Wet weekend and cheesecake

If it's pouring with rain outside and blowing a gale, there's nothing better than staying in, inviting some family over and baking for the occasion. My poison this weekend was what can only be described as the 'delectable', New York Cheesecake from the Hummingbird Bakery cookbook. I amazed myself at how prepared I was for the family lunch, by somehow managing to whisk up the recipe whilst my children ate their tea. My son wasn't keen as I blended the must-have Philadelphia to a light and fluffy topping, but I think he got over it as soon as he tasted it for himself. I've always been a Nigella fan when it comes to baking, so much so that whenever anyone eats one of my homemade cakes they cheekily ask, "Is it a Nigella, Nina?". So needless to say I was a little nervous about trying something new, but after tasting this weekend's dessert, I can't wait to try more! PS: Sorry about the lack of photos, but the cheesecake was so popular, I didn't even have a chance to take a pic of even a crumb! Thanks David!

Wednesday 24 February 2010

Sssshh, don't tell anybody, but Spring is on its way!

After battling through the rain to take my daughter to playgroup today, I managed to make time for a spot of pruning whilst my little boy slept soundly in his buggy. Armed with my clippers and my wellies, I headed out and quickly snipped away and rather excitingly, spotted the first signs of new growth. Buds are already appearing on the branches and those daffodils bulbs, which my daughter and I painstakingly planted in the Autumn, whilst my son sat on the grass and ate the leaves, are definitely coming up for air. Ahhh, the next few weeks are going to be filled with the hope of warmer weather and sunshine!

Tuesday 23 February 2010

Coffee, chocolate and Easter chicks

After popping along to Bury Lane Farm Shop for a quick cappuccino and croissant whilst I thought about the day ahead, I came across these cute little Easter chicks which are being sold in aid of Garden House Hospice. My children are going to love the knitted toys, and I can't wait to see the look on their faces when they discover the chocolate inside. And it's all for a good cause too.

We're open!

It was only when relaxing at home with a copy of Country Living magazine, after putting my two children to bed that I suddenly thought ‘but what about the small, local businesses? How do they promote themselves without going to expensive PR agencies?’ The potters, the artists and the purveyors of local fresh foods? It was then that I decided to combine my love of country life with my interest in supporting businesses like yours.
